UniSQ Art Gallery

At the University of Southern Queensland’s Toowoomba campus, this public gallery presents changing exhibitions alongside a university art collection of more than 1,000 artworks. Toowoomba Art Society

Based at Culliford House, the society offers two working studios and two public exhibition spaces: Culliford Gallery and Perinet Gallery. Toowoomba Historical Society

Established in 1949, the Toowoomba Historical Society is a research facility for the history and heritage of Toowoomba and its surrounds. Its resources include local-history books, articles, newspaper-clipping files, maps, photographs and online material. Research can lead into the stories of people, families, businesses, houses and events across Toowoomba and the Darling Downs, while lectures and publications extend the society’s public work.

Toowoomba Local History Library

Located within Toowoomba City Library, this archival collection reaches from local records to material of state and national significance. The Robinson Collection alone holds more than 5,000 items and over 3,000 photographs about Toowoomba and the Darling Downs. Researchers can also consult microfilm of the Toowoomba Chronicle and Darling Downs Gazette from the 1860s onwards, alongside records from local identities, businesses and community organisations.

Queensland Museum Cobb+Co

Cobb+Co explores transport and regional social history through the National Carriage Collection. Its permanent display includes more than 50 horse-drawn vehicles, including Cobb & Co coaches, buggies, wagons, carts, drays, sulkies and omnibuses. Together, these vehicles show how people and goods moved across Queensland. Family activities, school and group visits and a virtual tour add different ways to approach the collection.

DownsSteam Toowoomba

DownsSteam preserves and interprets Darling Downs railway heritage through its Drayton museum precinct and heritage train operations. Its rolling stock includes the C16-106 Southern Cross Works No. 28, built at the Toowoomba Foundry around 1914, along with steam locomotives, a railmotor and passenger coaches. Heritage rail experiences run when scheduled, while restoration work continues on historic locomotives and carriages.

Highfields Pioneer Village

North of Toowoomba, this open-air museum brings together historical buildings, machinery and specialist displays. Visitors can move between the Southern Cross Museum, Toowoomba Fire Brigade Museum, transport, ambulance and Queensland Energy displays, as well as a heritage chapel and reconstructed slab cottage. Royal Bull’s Head Inn

In Drayton, this nineteenth-century former inn and later Lynch family home offers a close look at furnished domestic and commercial spaces. The site includes household furniture and artefacts similar to those used during its early trading years, along with the old kitchen and surrounding garden. Established as an inn in 1847, rebuilt in 1859 and opened as a museum in 1985 after conservation work, it connects regional hospitality with family life.

Pittsworth Pioneer Historical Village

In Pittsworth, this historical village preserves the rural district’s early development through original buildings, equipment and artefacts. Displays include period room settings, apparel, lacework, stories of early settlers and settlements, and machinery. The village also holds memorabilia relating to Arthur Postle, the early twentieth-century sprinter known as the “Crimson Flash”, adding a sporting thread to its local history.

Millmerran Museum

This regional heritage collection is spread across 14 historical buildings on landscaped grounds. Displays cover a 1950s schoolhouse, farming and military material, pioneer women’s history and Indigenous artefacts. A central object is Water Baby, a fully restored 150-year-old steam launch. Maintained by the Millmerran & District Historical Society, the museum is also part of the Toowoomba Region transport heritage trail.

Gummingurru Aboriginal Historical Site

Gummingurru is a Jarowair Aboriginal cultural site between Highfields and Meringandan, north of Toowoomba. More than a dozen designs formed from local basalt stone arrangements remain part of the site. Booked visits through Gummingurru Aboriginal Corporation may include a journey with a Traditional Custodian, learning about stone artefacts, ochre grinding, ground-edge axe making and specially designed games. Visitors are asked to follow the site’s cultural and care requirements.
